Morrowind inventory icon resize12/16/2023 ![]() Most of the rest of the EE changes are things pulled from mods over the years. Unless you are over the moon about the three new characters, it sounds like vanilla BG is what you want anyway. Probably your best bet is to buy the original BG from GOG and then mod back in the things you like about EE. I would still prefer the old UI, but this is less of a problem than I had feared. But after scrolling around in the normal world map a bit, it seems I can then scroll even further south, and thus put the bottom of the world on the top of the text window. That put the bottom of the world at the bottom of the monitor, and I was indeed unable to issue commands to leave off the southern edge behind the text window. The last thing we should be doing is making more to replace existing, better designed UIs.ĮDIT: When I first tested this, I used the Map screen to go to the bottom of the Beregost map. The "modern" UI with overlapping transparent windows is a terrible paradigm that I'd like to see phased out. It's a completely needless pain, all for no benefit. I'll agree that this problem is much worse in other games that don't have a scrolling map with lots of black space, but that's no excuse to tolerate it here. That is NOT an improvement over the old UI.Īnd as a final note, the transparent window also makes it harder to read the text in the box itself when the world background is brightly lit. So if I want to, say, leave Beregost to the South, or attack an enemy on the bottom edge of the map, I need to either remove the text window to give the command (if that's even possible), or reposition and then click on the narrow bands between the edges of the text box and the sides of the world screen. That not only makes it harder to see, it also makes it impossible to click on that area. In other words, part of the world is now stuck BEHIND part of the UI. ![]() Under the new UI, it extends down to the bottom of the monitor, with the text box pasted on top of it. Under old UI, the "world" part of the screen filled the area between the top of the monitor (/game window) and the top of the text box. I've tilted at plenty of windmills in my day, but this is more than principle. I see your point, though I feel like you're partly holding on to a principle. I totally agree with you on this when it comes to more contemporary games (like NWN or Diablo 3), but not in BG:EE's case, which is probably the first game where I've actually liked the transparent and windowed UI.īecause in BG:EE's case it doesn't really obstruct anything compared to the old UI. But it's really getting in the way of my playing the game, and I'd desperately like to back to the old one. I get that people like the new UI, and I'm happy for them. So you can imagine how displeased I was to see the well designed UI of the original game changed so that it actively obstructs my view of the game world. Third, I *despise* modern UIs that layer transparent windows over the main window. But the fonts are much brighter and sharper, and I find the results jarring. Also, they switched all the text in the game to modern, scale-able fonts overlayed on the UI graphics. As a result, the edges of look weird, because they're supposed to be transitioning to a grey background and they don't. The new UI cut and pasted those buttons, but left them on a flat black background. ![]() The old UI had the buttons on a textured grey background. The change to the icons likewise makes it harder to see the details because the items in them are just smaller. First, the text is much harder to read, mostly because it's a smaller, denser font (especially on the pop-up scrolls.
